I had an entertaining exchange this week on Mark Drechsler's blog Join the Dots. Mark likened Mahara to a child that had lost it's way, but then went on to describe the redeeming qualities. Whilst it is usually easy enough to agree on positive qualities, whether in a child or software package, the importance and significance attributed to each of these qualities can vary wildly depending on an individuals viewpoint. This was the case on this occasion, and I presented an alternative view. It was taken in the spirit that it was offered, which was great, as dissenting views are not always welcomed in these politically correct times. I do miss the wide ranging debates of the past. Getting nostalgic now, so perhaps it is just fond memories, clouded by passing years!!
A response to my comments was posted by Linda Harasim, who raised additional questions. Linda wrote 'Ian, could you pls. start there. Why portfolios? How do we know? Which type of portfolio under what conditions? And so what? where do we go from here? Intriguingly, Linda'.
Probably why Linda is a Professor and I am a humble (ha, maybe not so humble) Lecturer in eBusiness and eMarketing. I think her questions are fundamental, and really do need to be answered over time. I have read widely on ePortfolios, have bought all the books, and and I don't think these questions have ever been adequately addressed. Rather than repeat it all here, visit Join the Dots, for an interesting read. Cheers, IK

Hey Ian,
Thanks for the pingback, and for your comments on the blog. Like I said, getting a different viewpoint on that earlier post was a good catalyst for me to think in more depth about my perspective, which is always a good thing :)
See you at Educause?
Mark.
Hi Mark,
It was a great discussion I thought. I wish there were more like it. Would love to go to Educause but conferences are usually way out of my $. Will probably try to make HERDSA.
Cheers, Ian
